1Now kingDavidwas old and strickenin years; and they coveredhim with clothes, but he gat no heat. 2Wherefore his servantssaidunto him, Let there be soughtfor my lordthe kinga youngvirgin: and let her standbeforethe king, and let her cherishhim, and let her liein thy bosom, that my lordthe kingmay get heat. 3So they soughtfor a fairdamselthroughout all the coastsof Israel, and foundAbishaga Shunammite, and broughther to the king. 4And the damsel was veryfair, and cherishedthe king, and ministeredto him: but the kingknew her not.
5Then Adonijahthe sonof Haggithexaltedhimself, saying, I will be king: and he preparedhim chariotsand horsemen, and fiftymento runbefore him. 6And his fatherhad not displeasedhim at any timein saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a verygoodly man; and his mother barehim afterAbsalom. 7And he conferredwith Joabthe sonof Zeruiah, and with Abiatharthe priest: and they followingAdonijahhelped him. 8But Zadokthe priest, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and Nathanthe prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9And Adonijahslewsheepand oxenand fat cattleby the stoneof Zoheleth, which is byEn-rogel, and calledall his brethrenthe king’ssons, and all the menof Judahthe king’sservants: 10But Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomonhis brother, he called not.
11Wherefore Nathanspakeunto Bath-shebathe motherof Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heardthat Adonijahthe sonof Haggithdoth reign, and Davidour lordknoweth it not? 12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest savethine own life, and the lifeof thy sonSolomon. 13Goand get thee inunto kingDavid, and sayunto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swearunto thine handmaid, saying, AssuredlySolomonthy sonshall reignafterme, and he shall situpon my throne? why then doth Adonijahreign? 14Behold, while thou yet talkestthere with the king, I also will come inafterthee, and confirmthy words.
15And Bath-shebawent inunto the kinginto the chamber: and the kingwas veryold; and Abishagthe Shunammiteministeredunto the king. 16And Bath-shebabowed, and did obeisanceunto the king. And the kingsaid, What wouldest thou? 17And she saidunto him, My lord, thou swarestby the LORDthy Godunto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomonthy sonshall reignafterme, and he shall situpon my throne. 18And now, behold, Adonijahreigneth; and now, my lordthe king, thou knowest it not: 19And he hath slainoxenand fat cattleand sheepin abundance, and hath calledall the sonsof the king, and Abiatharthe priest, and Joabthe captainof the host: but Solomonthy servanthath he not called. 20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyesof all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tellthem who shall siton the throneof my lordthe kingafter him. 21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lordthe kingshall sleepwith his fathers, that I and my sonSolomonshall be counted offenders.
22And, lo, while she yet talkedwith the king, Nathanthe prophetalso came in. 23And they toldthe king, saying, Behold Nathanthe prophet. And when he was come inbeforethe king, he bowedhimself before the kingwith his faceto the ground. 24And Nathansaid, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijahshall reignafterme, and he shall situpon my throne? 25For he is gone downthis day, and hath slainoxenand fat cattleand sheepin abundance, and hath calledall the king’ssons, and the captainsof the host, and Abiatharthe priest; and, behold, they eatand drinkbeforehim, and say, God savekingAdonijah. 26 But me, even me thy servant, and Zadokthe priest, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and thy servantSolomon, hath he not called. 27Is this thingdoneby my lordthe king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should siton the throneof my lordthe kingafter him?
28Then kingDavidansweredand said, Callme Bath-sheba. And she cameinto the king’spresence, and stoodbeforethe king. 29And the kingsware, and said, As the LORDliveth, that hath redeemedmy soulout of all distress, 30Even as I swareunto thee by the LORDGodof Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomonthy sonshall reignafterme, and he shall situpon my thronein my stead; even so will I certainly dothis day. 31Then Bath-shebabowed with her faceto the earth, and did reverenceto the king, and said, Let my lordkingDavidlivefor ever.
32And kingDavidsaid, Callme Zadokthe priest, and Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada. And they camebeforethe king. 33The kingalso saidunto them, Takewith you the servantsof your lord, and cause Solomonmy sonto rideupon mine own mule, and bring him downto Gihon: 34And let Zadokthe priestand Nathanthe prophetanointhim there kingover Israel: and blowye with the trumpet, and say, God savekingSolomon. 35Then ye shall come upafterhim, that he may comeand situpon my throne; for he shall be kingin my stead: and I have appointedhim to be rulerover Israeland over Judah. 36And Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiadaansweredthe king, and said, Amen: the LORDGodof my lordthe kingsay so too. 37As the LORDhath been with my lordthe king, even so be he with Solomon, and makehis thronegreaterthan the throneof my lordkingDavid.
38So Zadokthe priest, and Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomonto rideupon kingDavid’smule, and broughthim to Gihon. 39And Zadokthe priesttookan hornof oilout of the tabernacle, and anointedSolomon. And they blewthe trumpet; and all the peoplesaid, God savekingSolomon. 40And all the peoplecame upafterhim, and the peoplepipedwith pipes, and rejoicedwith greatjoy, so that the earthrentwith the sound of them.
41And Adonijahand all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an endof eating. And when Joabheardthe soundof the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noiseof the citybeing in an uproar? 42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathanthe sonof Abiatharthe priestcame: and Adonijahsaidunto him, Come in; for thou art a valiantman, and bringestgoodtidings. 43And Jonathanansweredand saidto Adonijah, Verilyour lordkingDavidhath made Solomonking. 44And the kinghath sentwith him Zadokthe priest, and Nathanthe prophet, and Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to rideupon the king’smule: 45And Zadokthe priestand Nathanthe prophethave anointedhim kingin Gihon: and they are come upfrom thence rejoicing, so that the cityrang again. This is the noisethat ye have heard. 46And also Solomonsittethon the throneof the kingdom. 47And moreover the king’sservantscameto blessour lordkingDavid, saying, Godmake the nameof Solomonbetterthan thy name, and makehis thronegreaterthan thy throne. And the kingbowedhimself upon the bed. 48And also thus saidthe king, Blessed be the LORDGodof Israel, which hath given one to siton my thronethis day, mine eyeseven seeing it.
49And all the guests that were with Adonijahwere afraid, and rose up, and wentevery manhis way. 50And Adonijahfearedbecauseof Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught holdon the hornsof the altar. 51And it was toldSolomon, saying, Behold, AdonijahfearethkingSolomon: for, lo, he hath caught holdon the hornsof the altar, saying, Let kingSolomonswearunto me to daythat he will not slayhis servantwith the sword.
52And Solomonsaid, If he will shew himself a worthyman, there shall not an hairof him fallto the earth: but if wickednessshall be foundin him, he shall die. 53So kingSolomonsent, and they brought him downfrom the altar. And he cameand bowedhimself to kingSolomon: and Solomonsaidunto him, Goto thine house.
