1Now afterthe deathof Joshuait came to pass, that the childrenof Israelaskedthe LORD, saying, Who shall go upfor us against the Canaanitesfirst, to fight against them? 2And the LORDsaid, Judahshall go up: behold, I have deliveredthe landinto his hand. 3And Judahsaidunto Simeonhis brother, Come upwith me into my lot, that we may fightagainst the Canaanites; and I likewise will gowith thee into thy lot. So Simeonwent with him.
4And Judahwent up; and the LORDdeliveredthe Canaanitesand the Perizzitesinto their hand: and they slewof them in Bezektenthousandmen. 5And they foundAdoni-bezekin Bezek: and they foughtagainst him, and they slewthe Canaanitesand the Perizzites. 6But Adoni-bezekfled; and they pursuedafterhim, and caughthim, and cut offhis thumbsand his great toes. 7And Adoni-bezeksaid, Threescore and tenkings, having their thumbsand their great toescut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so Godhath requitedme. And they broughthim to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8Now the childrenof Judahhad foughtagainst Jerusalem, and had takenit, and smittenit with the edgeof the sword, and setthe cityon fire. 9And afterwardthe childrenof Judahwent downto fightagainst the Canaanites, that dweltin the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley. 10And Judahwentagainst the Canaanitesthat dweltin Hebron: ( now the nameof Hebronbefore was Kirjath-arba:) and they slewSheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. 11And from thence he wentagainst the inhabitantsof Debir: and the nameof Debirbefore was Kirjath-sepher: 12And Calebsaid, He that smitethKirjath-sepher, and takethit, to him will I giveAchsahmy daughterto wife. 13And Othnielthe sonof Kenaz, Caleb’syoungerbrother, tookit: and he gavehim Achsahhis daughterto wife. 14And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she movedhim to askof her fathera field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Calebsaid unto her, What wilt thou? 15And she saidunto him, Giveme a blessing: for thou hast givenme a southland; giveme also springsof water.
