The wordof the LORDthat came to Joelthe sonof Pethuel.
Hearthis, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitantsof the land. Hath this been in your days, or evenin the daysof your fathers? 3Tellye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their childrenanothergeneration. 4That which the palmerwormhath lefthath the locusteaten; and that which the locusthath lefthath the cankerwormeaten; and that which the cankerwormhath lefthath the caterpillereaten.
Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkersof wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut offfrom your mouth. 6For a nationis come upupon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teethof a lion, and he hath the cheek teethof a great lion. 7He hath laidmy vinewaste, and barkedmy fig tree: he hath made it cleanbare, and cast it away; the branchesthereof are made white.
Lamentlike a virgingirdedwith sackclothfor the husbandof her youth. 9The meat offeringand the drink offeringis cut offfrom the houseof the LORD; the priests, the LORD’sministers, mourn. 10The fieldis wasted, the landmourneth; for the cornis wasted: the new wineis dried up, the oillanguisheth. 11Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheatand for the barley; because the harvestof the fieldis perished. 12The vineis dried up, and the fig treelanguisheth; the pomegranatetree, the palm treealso, and the apple tree, even all the treesof the field, are withered: because joyis withered awayfrom the sonsof men.
Girdyourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministersof the altar: come, lie all nightin sackcloth, ye ministersof my God: for the meat offeringand the drink offeringis withholdenfrom the houseof your God.
Sanctifyye a fast, calla solemn assembly, gatherthe elders and all the inhabitantsof the land into the houseof the LORDyour God, and cryunto the LORD,
Alasfor the day! for the dayof the LORD is at hand, and as a destructionfrom the Almightyshall it come. 16Is not the meatcut offbefore our eyes, yea, joyand gladnessfrom the houseof our God?
The seedis rottenunder their clods, the garnersare laid desolate, the barnsare broken down; for the cornis withered. 18How do the beastsgroan! the herdsof cattleare perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocksof sheepare made desolate.
O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the firehath devouredthe pasturesof the wilderness, and the flamehath burnedall the treesof the field. 20The beastsof the fieldcryalso unto thee: for the riversof watersare dried up, and the firehath devouredthe pasturesof the wilderness.
