In the eighthmonth, in the secondyearof Darius, came the wordof the LORDunto Zechariah, the sonof Berechiah, the sonof Iddothe prophet, saying, 2The LORDhath been soredispleasedwith your fathers.
Therefore saythou unto them, Thus saiththe LORDof hosts; Turnye unto me, saiththe LORDof hosts, and I will turnunto you, saiththe LORDof hosts. 4Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the formerprophetshave cried, saying, Thus saiththe LORDof hosts; Turnye now from your evilways, and from your evildoings: but they did not hear, nor hearkenunto me, saiththe LORD. 5Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they livefor ever?
But my wordsand my statutes, which I commandedmy servantsthe prophets, did they not take holdof your fathers? and they returnedand said, Like as the LORDof hoststhoughtto dounto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
Upon the fourand twentiethdayof the eleventhmonth, which is the monthSebat, in the secondyearof Darius, came the wordof the LORDunto Zechariah, the sonof Berechiah, the sonof Iddothe prophet, saying, 8I sawby night, and behold a manridingupon a redhorse, and he stoodamong the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there redhorses, speckled, and white.
Then saidI, O my lord, what are these? And the angelthat talkedwith me saidunto me, I will shew thee what these be. 10And the manthat stoodamong the myrtle treesansweredand said, These are they whom the LORDhath sentto walkto and fro through the earth. 11And they answeredthe angelof the LORDthat stoodamong the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and frothrough the earth, and, behold, all the earthsitteth still, and is at rest.
Then the angelof the LORDansweredand said, O LORDof hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercyon Jerusalemand on the citiesof Judah, against which thou hast had indignationthese threescore and tenyears? 13And the LORDanswered the angelthat talked with me with goodwords and comfortablewords.
So the angelthat communedwith me saidunto me, Crythou, saying, Thus saiththe LORDof hosts; I am jealousfor Jerusalemand for Zionwith a greatjealousy. 15And I am verysoredispleasedwith the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a littledispleased, and they helpedforward the affliction. 16Therefore thus saiththe LORD; I am returnedto Jerusalemwith mercies: my houseshall be builtin it, saiththe LORDof hosts, and a lineshall be stretched forthupon Jerusalem.
Cryyet, saying, Thus saiththe LORDof hosts; My citiesthrough prosperityshall yet be spread abroad; and the LORDshall yet comfortZion, and shall yet chooseJerusalem. 18Then lifted I upmine eyes, and saw, and behold fourhorns. 19And I saidunto the angelthat talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the hornswhich have scatteredJudah, Israel, and Jerusalem. 20And the LORDshewedme fourcarpenters.
Then saidI, What comethese to do? And he spake, saying, These are the hornswhich have scatteredJudah, so thatno mandid lift uphis head: but these are cometo fraythem, to cast outthe hornsof the Gentiles, which lifted up their hornover the landof Judahto scatter it.
