1There was a manin the landof Uz, whose name was Job; and that manwas perfectand upright, and one that fearedGod, and eschewedevil. 2And there were bornunto him sevensonsand threedaughters. 3His substancealso was seventhousandsheep, and threethousandcamels, and fivehundredyokeof oxen, and fivehundredshe asses, and a verygreathousehold; so that this manwas the greatestof all the menof the east.
4And his sonswentand feasted in their houses, every onehis day; and sentand calledfor their threesistersto eatand to drink with them. 5And it was so, when the days of their feastingwere gone about, that Jobsentand sanctifiedthem, and rose up earlyin the morning, and offeredburnt offerings according to the numberof them all: for Jobsaid, It may bethat my sonshave sinned, and cursedGodin their hearts. Thus didJobcontinually.
6Now there was a daywhen the sonsof Godcameto presentthemselves before the LORD, and Satancamealso among them. 7And the LORDsaidunto Satan, Whencecomestthou? Then Satanansweredthe LORD, and said, From going to and froin the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 8And the LORDsaidunto Satan, Hast thou consideredmy servantJob, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfectand an uprightman, one that fearethGod, and eschewethevil? 9Then Satanansweredthe LORD, and said, Doth JobfearGodfor nought? 10Hast not thou made an hedgeabout him, and abouthis house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessedthe workof his hands, and his substanceis increasedin the land. 11Butput forththine handnow, and touchall that he hath, and he will cursethee to thy face. 12And the LORDsaidunto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forththine hand. So Satanwent forthfrom the presenceof the LORD.
13And there was a daywhen his sonsand his daughters were eatingand drinkingwinein their eldestbrother’shouse: 14And there camea messengerunto Job, and said, The oxenwere plowing, and the assesfeedingbeside them: 15And the Sabeansfell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slainthe servantswith the edgeof the sword; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee. 16 While he was yet speaking, there camealso another, and said, The fireof Godis fallenfrom heaven, and hath burned upthe sheep, and the servants, and consumedthem; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee. 17 While he was yet speaking, there camealso another, and said, The Chaldeansmade outthreebands, and fellupon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slainthe servantswith the edgeof the sword; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee. 18 While he was yet speaking, there camealso another, and said, Thy sonsand thy daughters were eatingand drinkingwinein their eldestbrother’shouse: 19And, behold, there camea greatwindfromthe wilderness, and smotethe fourcornersof the house, and it fellupon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee.
20Then Jobarose, and renthis mantle, and shavedhis head, and fell downupon the ground, and worshipped, 21And said, Nakedcame I outof my mother’swomb, and nakedshall I returnthither: the LORDgave, and the LORDhath taken away; blessedbe the nameof the LORD. 22In all this Jobsinnednot, nor chargedGodfoolishly.
