1Now it came to pass in the dayswhen the judgesruled, that there was a faminein the land. And a certain manof Beth-lehem-judahwentto sojournin the countryof Moab, he, and his wife, and his twosons. 2And the nameof the man was Elimelech, and the nameof his wifeNaomi, and the nameof his twosonsMahlonand Chilion, Ephrathitesof Beth-lehem-judah. And they cameinto the countryof Moab, and continued there. 3And ElimelechNaomi’shusbanddied; and she was left, and her twosons. 4And they tookthem wivesof the womenof Moab; the nameof the one was Orpah, and the nameof the otherRuth: and they dwelledthere about tenyears. 5And Mahlonand Chiliondiedalso bothof them; and the womanwas leftof her twosonsand her husband.
6Then she arosewith her daughters in law, that she might returnfrom the countryof Moab: for she had heardin the countryof Moabhow that the LORDhad visitedhis peoplein givingthem bread. 7Wherefore she went forthout of the placewhere she was, and her twodaughters in lawwith her; and they wenton the wayto returnunto the landof Judah.
8And Naomisaidunto her twodaughters in law, Go, returneachto her mother’shouse: the LORDdealkindlywith you, as ye have dealtwith the dead, and with me. 9The LORDgrantyou that ye may findrest, each of you in the houseof her husband. Then she kissedthem; and they lifted uptheir voice, and wept. 10And they saidunto her, Surely we will returnwith thee unto thy people.
11And Naomisaid, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sonsin my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too oldto have an husband. If I should say, I havehope, if I should have an husbandalso to night, and should also bearsons; 13Would ye tarryfor themtill they were grown? would ye stayfor themfrom having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grievethme muchfor your sakes that the handof the LORDis gone out against me.
14And they lifted uptheir voice, and wept again: and Orpahkissedher mother in law; but Ruthclave unto her. 15And she said, Behold, thy sister in lawis gone backunto her people, and unto her gods: returnthou afterthy sister in law. 16And Ruthsaid, Intreatme not to leave thee, or to returnfrom following afterthee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy Godmy God: 17Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORDdoso to me, and more also, if ought but deathpart thee and me.
18When she sawthat she was stedfastly mindedto gowith her, then she leftspeaking unto her. 19So they twowentuntil they cameto Beth-lehem. And it came to pass, when they were cometo Beth-lehem, that all the citywas movedabout them, and they said, Is this Naomi? 20And she saidunto them, Callme not Naomi, callme Mara: for the Almightyhath dealt verybitterly with me. 21I went outfull, and the LORDhath brought me home againempty: why then callye me Naomi, seeing the LORDhath testifiedagainst me, and the Almightyhath afflicted me?
22So Naomireturned, and Ruththe Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returnedout of the countryof Moab: and they cameto Beth-lehemin the beginningof barleyharvest.
