1Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, whenat the firsthe lightly afflictedthe landof Zebulunand the landof Naphtali, and afterwarddid more grievously afflict her by the wayof the sea, beyondJordan, in Galileeof the nations.
2The peoplethat walkedin darknesshave seena greatlight: they that dwellin the landof the shadow of death, upon them hath the lightshined. 3Thou hast multipliedthe nation, and not increasedthe joy: they joybeforethee according to the joyin harvest, and as men rejoicewhen they dividethe spoil. 4For thou hast brokenthe yokeof his burden, and the staffof his shoulder, the rodof his oppressor, as in the dayof Midian. 5For every battleof the warrior is with confused noise, and garmentsrolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuelof fire.
6For unto us a childis born, unto us a sonis given: and the governmentshall be upon his shoulder: and his nameshall be calledWonderful, Counsellor, The mightyGod, The everlastingFather, The Princeof Peace. 7Of the increase of his governmentand peace there shall be no end, upon the throneof David, and upon his kingdom, to orderit, and to establishit with judgmentand with justicefrom henceforth even forever. The zealof the LORDof hostswill perform this.
8The Lordsenta wordinto Jacob, and it hath lightedupon Israel. 9And all the peopleshall know, even Ephraimand the inhabitantof Samaria, that sayin the prideand stoutnessof heart, 10The bricksare fallen down, but we will buildwith hewn stones: the sycomoresare cut down, but we will change them into cedars. 11Therefore the LORDshall set upthe adversariesof Rezinagainst him, and joinhis enemiestogether; 12The Syriansbefore, and the Philistinesbehind; and they shall devourIsraelwith open mouth. For all this his angeris not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. 13For the peopleturnethnot unto him that smiteththem, neither do they seekthe LORDof hosts.
14Therefore the LORDwill cut offfrom Israelheadand tail, branchand rush, in oneday. 15The ancientand honourable, he is the head; and the prophetthat teachethlies, he is the tail. 16For the leadersof this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.
17Therefore the Lordshall have no joyin their young men, neither shall have mercyon their fatherlessand widows: for every one is an hypocriteand an evildoer, and every mouthspeakethfolly. For all this his angeris not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. 18For wickednessburnethas the fire: it shall devourthe briersand thorns, and shall kindlein the thicketsof the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting upof smoke. 19Through the wrathof the LORDof hostsis the landdarkened, and the peopleshall be as the fuelof the fire: no manshall sparehis brother. 20And he shall snatchon the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eaton the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eatevery manthe fleshof his own arm: 21Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his angeris not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
